While almost all markets boast fun, friendly atmospheres, and fresh food, the distinction between a certified market and just any old market is an important one. A regular market consists of a conglomerate of entrepreneurial-type people who rent a space and sell goods to consumers at exorbitant prices. Interestingly the buyer might assume the higher prices indicate higher quality, but this is not always the case.

A certified farmer's market, on the other hand, offers up cheaper produce that has been grown locally and is picked ripe. The definition of a certified market is that the food which is being sold must be done so by a certified primary producer and must come from within a defined local region. Vendors may also sell value-added products which must be made by themselves using ingredients from a certified primary producer. That is, the people selling goods at a certified market are the actual farmers and artisans themselves. They are the ones who have grown the produce, raised the cows, made the cheese, spun the yarn and baked the bread; a fantastic concept.

Reasons to Support a Certified Market

As if supporting local farmers isn't reason enough, here are five more reasons to support local certified farmer's markets:

  • The food is healthier. Consumers reap the benefits of eating locally grown produce; it is fresh, has been picked ripe and therefore includes more essential vitamins and nutrients than the competition which was likely picked prematurely, flown in from China, then sprayed to help preserve it and finally stored for several weeks before being purchased. Buying local honey, offers the consumer natural anti-allergens, as an added perk.
  • Meet the Farmer. The consumer is guaranteed actual interactions with the producer. This means questions ranging from production to serving techniques can be asked of the producer. The producer will likely be happy to share organic growing tips, or their favourite beet recipes, if prompted. The farmer will also likely be pleased to personally select the best of his/her produce if asked.
  • It is a social event. The same group of vendors will return to the market week after week, therefore the consumer is able to make connections with other people who are excited about growing food locally. This will likely become something to look forward to as market day approaches, and relationships develop with these creative people who are now responsible for providing their regular customers with top quality food.
  • Less waste. Egg producers will likely accept returned egg cartons, and honey producers may encourage people to return glass jars for a refund. Often the consumer uses fewer single-use plastic bags as these are not as conveniently located. Furthermore, because it is a certified market and local is part of that definition, the produce has not traveled far to get to the consumer. Therefore fewer fossil fuels have been burned in order to get the food to market. Revelling in this earthly contribution is acceptable.
  • Cheaper. Because food is being purchased directly from the primary producer, there is no middle agent who gets paid to store and cool/warm the food. This means the consumer pays less for better produce!
