Food City Markets Inc
If you live in Auckland, there is nothing like escaping the city, even for a day, to lower the blood pressure and clear the head. And if you need more specific reasons than that, Mangawhai hosts a cute little country market twice a month on a Sunday, has plenty of open air restaurants and cafes to relax (although don’t expect anything less than Auckland prices), and some great art galleries to pick and meander your way through.
Getting to Mangawhai
It’s one thing to escape Auckland but you also don’t want to be on the road all day. Mangawhai is one of the most popular day trips from Auckland because it’s a mere 90 minutes each way. It’s easy to reach i.e. all the way on State Highway 1, before turning right onto a well signposted road to Mangawhai, and it’s a pleasant drive just getting there. Vineyards, farms, small towns, art galleries – all the best things about rural New Zealand, lie between Auckland and Mangawhai.
What’s at Mangawhai?
Mangawhai is a popular holiday destination due to its proximity to beaches and fishing at Mangawhai Heads. Mangawhai Village is about a five-minute drive from the separate shopping precinct at Mangawhai Heads. Mangawhai Village has some gorgeous art galleries and antique curio stores whilst Mangawhai Heads is filled with the usual stores catering for all things beachy.
