Hillers Markets
On January 31, 2010, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded forwards Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers and Niklas Hagman and defenseman Ian White to the Calgary Flames for defensemen Dion Phaneuf and Keith Aulie and forward Fredric Sjostrom. Only half an hour later, they traded goalie Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake to the Anaheim Ducks for goalie Jean-Sébastien Giguère.
Although Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke said that the trade talks had been going on for many weeks, the timing could not have been better. The Leafs had lost six in a row, including a horrid outing the night before when they scored three goals on an elite goalie, then failed to score on his below-average backup.
The team’s future never looked bleaker. The playoffs were a distant memory. Once again, all the team’s faults that have prevented a championship since 1967 resurfaced and were magnified. The team could not draft well. They gave away draft picks and young players precisely before they blossomed into franchise players. They had no defensive mettle. And the goaltending never looked worse in franchise history.
