Oligopolistic Markets
The first quarter results published by Cosmote, Vodafone Hellas and Wind Hellas, all operators offering mobile communication service in the Greek market, indicate that the accumulated number of mobile subscriptions totaled about 19,431 million at the end of March.
This is about 1,328 million less than that reported at the end of 2009. It should be noted that at the end of March 2009, the totaled number of registered subscribers was 19,584.
This is considered a historic first, since traditionally mobile communication subscriptions have either increased or remained stable in Greece.
Greek Mobile Telecom Service Providers
The three mobile operators offering mobile service in the Greek market, Cosmote, Vodafone Hellas and Wind Hellas, were quick to point out on June 23rd, that the dismal results were not because of the ongoing financial crisis, but rather their efforts to clean up their subscription databases by rationalizing prepaid subscriptions which today require correlation with the service users’ identification information.
Mobile operators also pointed out that the number of contract subscribers increased marginally with respect to last years’ results.
Greek Mobile Telecom Providers’ Market Shares
Regarding market shares, Cosmote’s share is currently measured at 45%, an increase of 1% with respect to last December. Vodafone’s market share is reported at 31% (from 31,5%) and Wind Hellas’ market share at about 23,5% from last year’s 24%.
